Steinhatchee Florida is located in the "Big Bend" of
Florida at the mouth of the Steinhatchee River, where
the river flows into theGulf of Mexico. This is about
90 miles south of Tallahassee, Florida and approximately
70 miles west of Gainesville, Florida. in Taylor County,
just across the Steinhatchee River from Jena, Florida in
Dixie County. Steinhatchee's location places it in the
very heart of the Nature Coast. While still small
and quaint, commercial fishing in Dead Man's Bay has
virtually halted due to the "Florida Net Ban" Most of
the commercial fishing these days is done for Grouper
off-shore in the Gulf of Mexico. Blue crabs, stone
crabs and shrimp are still taken commercially by
fishermen in the bay.
Steinhatchee has always been a popular spot on the
map for fishermen and
hunters alike. The pristine shoreline and shallow
grass flats provide habitat for numerous species of
salt water fish. This equates to great sport fishing.
Scalloping in the summer
offers a lot of family fun and a chance for some out door
swimming exercise. Bring sun protection!
Fall and winter usually provide great fishing in the
Steinhatchee River and on the grass flats for speckled trout
and redfish. Other species are taken as well. Dog
hunting for deer and hogs it a very popular outdoor
sport here during hunting season with fox hunting being very
popular during other times of the year. There are many still
hunt areas here as well and several hunting clubs.
There are
several out door parks for picnics and swimming.
There are trails for hiking and the area is truly a real
Florida outback experience. Of course there is the
upper river for rafting and canoeing. Tide Swamp Wild
Life Management Area and Steinhatchee Wildlife
Management Area both provide an area for hunters, with
habitat for deer, turkey, wild hog, panther, fox, coyote,
and other small game. A great place to enjoy the out
doors, slow down and relax. Well worth a visit.
Oh, one more thing. Steinhatchee is pronounced
"Steen-hatch-ee".
